The elegance of baccarat is that the dealing is mostly automatic. The useful part to learn is what each bet means, how the drawing rules work, and what each choice costs over time.
In standard punto banco baccarat, two hands—Player and Banker—are dealt toward a total closest to 9. You bet on which hand wins or on a tie. Drawing decisions follow fixed rules. Under common eight-deck rules with a 5% banker commission, the banker bet has a house edge of about 1.06%, player about 1.24%, and an 8-to-1 tie about 14.36%.

The one distinction that clears up most confusion
“Player” and “Banker” are names of the two hands. They do not mean that you personally become the casino’s banker or that a human player controls the Player hand. In punto banco, both hands are governed by a fixed dealing procedure.
This is why baccarat strategy is narrower than poker strategy. You are not choosing whether to hit or stand. The principal strategic question is which wager—if any—you accept at the posted payout.
What Baccaret will never call a “system”
Betting progressions such as Martingale, Fibonacci or “road-map” pattern chasing do not alter the underlying probability of an independent fair deal. They can alter how your wins and losses are distributed, and they can alter the chance of a catastrophic session loss, but they do not erase the game’s expected cost.
Suggested learning path
- Learn scoring. Only the final digit matters: 7 + 8 = 15, so the baccarat total is 5.
- Learn naturals. An initial two-card 8 or 9 usually ends the drawing procedure immediately.
- Understand the automatic draw rules. Especially the Banker table.
- Compare bets by house edge, not payout size.
- Set a budget before the first wager.
